In a recent performance of Hunan Han Opera (also known as Changde Han Opera) Fan Wuke(Defiance at the Martial Examination ), Wu Yibing’s Yue Fei faced Ling Shiyu’s Chai Gui in a spear duel. Through their singing, stylized movements, footwork and expressive eye work, the two performers portray sharply contrasting characters. Wu’s steady, crisp movements and forceful spearwork render Yue Fei’s courage and composure with great nuance. Ling, meanwhile, shifts his rhythm and movements to portray Chai Gui’s emotional turn from a defiant challenger to someone increasingly thrown off balance. Their intertwined exchanges of attack and defense, advance and retreat, bring both physical intensity and dramatic tension to the martial examination scene. More than a display of martial skill, this opera piece also conveys enduring values — the courage to stand up against tyranny, uphold justice and remain devoted to one’s country. These themes still give this traditional martial opera strong relevance and emotional appeal today.
